JP: Music Industry Questions

Why is a music video so significant?

Music videos are so significant because they promote the artist through the internet on websites such as YouTube and Vevo, and they can get their videos aired on music television channels. Music videos can be very important as if they catch the eye of the viewer, for example if a music video is very well made or tells an interesting story, people will be attracted to watch it and through watching it could become interested in the music accompanying the video. The audience can relate to the video by positioning themselves within it in many situations, making them even more attracted to watch it, and when listening to the music without a video, many people imagine the video as it becomes a part of the music. Music videos can also sell themselves individually, as you can buy them off iTunes and similar music purchasing sites, making more money for the producers and the artist.

What is the production process of a music video?

A shoot for a video usually takes about five days of preparation and one or two days of actual shooting. A shoot on location os often much easier than a shoot in a set, due to the freedom of a location. For the shoot, the entire crew including the artist and supporting cast all come together. The job of the director is to make the video look as good as possible, no matter what the budget. Making videos with large crews can be very cost effective, as large groups of dancers can have large requests of money for transport alone. Security costs can also be very high if the actors or artists are very famous. After the shoot, the producer and production assistant spend a day or two wrapping up the whole event, as well as getting invoices from unit members and cast so that everyone gets paid.
